Original cabinet photo showing a handsome young wine &/or beer merchant with bottles of wine &/or beer. There are two different types of bottles sitting on the table. We are not certain whether one bottle is a wine bottle & one bottle is a beer bottle? Or they could be two different types of bottles for the same produce? We do not know.
There is a glass sitting on the table which is partially full. The glass is dark on the bottom area giving the feeling that there is either wine or a very dark beer in the glass. Sitting on the floor is a basket which has wine or beer bottles in it.
Very interestingly, there is a revolver type pistol leaning up against one of the bottles. So, it appears that this Latvian spirits merchant was definitely not to be messed with! This cabinet photo measures 6 7/16″ by 4 1/4″. This photo is circa 1880’s-1890’s.
The photographer’s marking of “Ed. Kalcenau Rujen” is on both the front bottom border & the back of the card. We are fairly sure that this photographer worked in Latvia. However, there is a slight chance that he worked in Bulgaria. There is a bump & a tiny wrinkle at the bottom right corner tip. The top left corner has a couple of small surface scuffs. The mount shows some age toning. The back of the mat has a strip of old tissue paper residue at the top. This could probably be carefully removed with a little effort. But, we will leave that option to the buyer. The photo has rich & pleasing contrasts. The condition is shown in the pics.
