Tom Doligale and his Udolpho Wolfe’s Aromatic Schnapps

In case you missed it, Ralph Finch did a nice two (2) page spread in the latest July 2011 Antique Bottle & Glass Collector titled EXHIBITIONISTS, Tom Doligale is on the trail of rare pontiled Wolfes. The photo was taken by Janet Finch (see above). To subscribe to AB&GC (click here).

Anyway, I wanted more pictures! I had seen his display at the 2010 Wilmington, Ohio FOHBC National and was knocked over. Well… Tom sends me like a hundred or so killer pictures. Wow!!! this was tough…I picked a few of my favorites as far as dramatic photography and posted below…Tom will definitely be represented in the FOHBC Virtual Museum project (click here)

Congratulations Tom…this is an incredible collection. Well done photographs too!

Unlisted Morning Call Bitters

Unlisted Morning Call Bitters

30 July 2011

Apple-Touch-IconABy now, I suppose many of you have heard about the unlisted Morning Call Bitters that I was fortunate enough to win at the FOHBC live auction at the 2011 FOHBC Memphis National Bottle Show & Sale. After much promotion, fanfare and advance publicity (which is not the way to get a bottle cheap!) the bottle was finally auctioned on 25 June 2011. After rather spirited on-line and floor bidding, the eventual hammer price was $5,460.00. Ouch.

Read: A Morning Call Bitters Comparison

I possess quite a few unlisted and/or extremely rare bitters bottles and this is one I will cherish with the rest.

German Tonic Bitters – Boggs, Cottman & Co.

German Tonic Bitters – Boggs, Cottman & Co.

B.B.B. – Boggs Balt Bitters

30 July 2011 (R•090418) (R•052319)

Apple-Touch-IconAEarlier this morning, I posted some pictures and information from Baltimore collector, Chris Rowell (click here). Specifically speaking it was…

“When I finally got hooked on bottles in 2002 (read story), I had the pleasure of quickly meeting a fellow named Chris Rowell who is a stand-out member of the Baltimore Club and an experienced digger. He actually sold me one of my favorite bitters which is a perfect example of a killer, pontiled, Boggs, Cottman & Co. German Tonic Bitters (R/H G 28).

That got me thinking about my Boggs, Cottman & Co. German Tonic Bitters. It’s dark outside so I can’t check on my baby so I thought I would post a few pictures. PS: This is a BALTIMORE bottle! Earlier writings inferred that this was a western bitters. That is incorrect.

The updated Carlyn Ring and W.C. Ham listing in Bitters Bottles Supplement 2 is as follows:

G 28 GERMAN // TONIC BITTERS // f // BOGGS, COTTMAN & CO //
9 3/4 x 3 (7 1/2) 1/2
Square, Aqua, LTCR, Applied mouth, With and without Metallic pontil mark, Very rare
BAR p48, UMB 42, WAT 131
Boggs, Cottman & Co., (William A. Boggs & James S. Cottman) Importer and Dealers in Wines, Liquors &c. and Commission Merchants, Baltimore, Maryland.
Advertisements: German Tonic Bitters being sold by Erney & Bro. – Gettysburg Compiler, June 24 1850, Boggs, Cottman & Co., Nos. 44 and 46 Lombard Street, selling German Tonic Bitters – The Daily Exchange, March 9 1859, Boggs’ German Tonic Bitters, Boggs Cottman & Co., No. 46 Lombard Street, Notes ‘in use’ more than 20 years – The Baltimore Sun, June 25 1864, B.B.B., Boggs Balt Bitters, Bogg’s German Tonic Bitters, Wade, Boykin & Co., Wholesale Druggists, No. 3 North Liberty St. – The Tarborough Southerner, February 24, 1870
Example dug at Jacob’s Wells, Nevada, which is now Carson City.

My example was purchased from Chris Rowell in October 2002 and has a metallic pontil. It is full of whittle and bubbles and has a few light olive striation streaks. I believe it to be the best example of the three or four bottles that are known to exist. I have seen three of them.

B.B.B. Boggs Balt Bitters

German Tonic Bitters was noted in advertising to have first been used in 1844. We can not confirm this but there was probably some labeled concoction that was the predecessor to Boggs’ German Tonic Bitters in the embossed square aqua bottle. This bitters product was made and sold from around 1859 to 1871. The bottles were probably produced around 1865 and were made at the Baltimore Glass Works. Boggs’ German Tonic Bitters was sold by the case and for $1 a quart bottle. Yes, some examples did make it out west. By 1870, advertising was in full swing and the brand advertised itself as “B.B.B. Boggs Balt Bitters”

Boggs, Cottman & Co. was first listed in 1847 or so selling liquors and wines in Baltimore at 46 W. Lombard St. The partners were William A. Boggs and James S. Cottman. Prior to Cottman joining, it was Boggs & Son as noted in advertising in 1842. This would have been Harmanus Boggs and his son William. Cottman would marry into the family when he married Elizabeth McEldery Boggs, of Pennsylvania ancestry, on April 25, 1844. James Stuart Cottman was the son of Lazarus and Elizabeth Morris (Bishop) Cottman. They were the parents of two sons, James Hough Cottman and Clarence Cottman. James Stuart Cottman died on June 9, 1863.

Some Nice Baltimore Bottles from Chris Rowell

As some of you may know, I am from Baltimore originally. Though I left in 1975, I still get back often to see my family, work on business projects and of coarse, hit the Annual Baltimore Antique Bottle Show & Sale each year (click here). I also belong to the Baltimore Antique Bottle Club (click here).

When I finally got hooked on bottles in 2002 (read story), I had the pleasure of quickly meeting a fellow named Chris Rowell who is a stand-out member of the Baltimore Club and an experienced digger. He actually sold me one of my favorite bitters which is a perfect example of a killer, pontiled, Boggs, Cottman & Co. German Tonic Bitter (R/H G 28) (click here).

Anyway, I see Chris usually once a year at the Baltimore show but whenever I do, I am always reminded of his digging stories and some of the great bottles he finds.

I posted a few pictures today that Chris posted on Facebook: Bottle Collectors (click here).

Reno Show Pictures in from Pam Selenak

Pam and Randy Selenak from Orange, California were kind enough to send a nice group of pictures from the Reno Show last weekend. I posted a few of my favorites…

On a separate note, I would like to welcome and congratulate Pam on her nomination and approval as FOHBC Public Relations Director. This occured during a Board conference call last evening. Really excited about this! Pam brings a lot to the table.

2011 Houston Bottle Show Report

It is interesting to set up at the Houston Show. It is so small and there are so few, if any of the things I look for.

From talking to the old-timers here such as Barbara Puckett (Show Organizer), Tom and Alicia Booth, Alton Neatherlin, Neil and Linda Buso & Ed Letard, I understand that Houston used to be a mega show with the likes of Dr. Sam Greer, Bob & Beka Mebane, Norm Heckler, Bill Agee, Dr. Richard Cannon and many others in regular attendance.

I did meet quite a few new collectors, signed up a number of new FOHBC members, turned many newbies on to the digital revolution in bottles with the bottle web sites and bottle blogs (I always have my laptop with me) and of course…. got some GREAT LEADS on some sleeper Bitters Bottles that have been tucked away for decades. THAT IS WHY I GO TO SHOWS!

I also had the pleasure of meeting Jim Schmidt (noted Civil War author and blogger) and his wife. Visit: Civil War Medicine and looking at some of Dan Cowman’s massive Bitters Ephemera duplicates. WOW! Dan also mentioned that he purchased only the second know original large Roback’s Stomach Bitters bar picture on eBay recently for 5k. The other known picture is in the Library of Congress.

Anyway, the pictures…. (by the way…you can see my table photographs by clicking Meyer Table)

Special Message for Jeff, Bob and Bill who were hitting the Reno Show (Bitters on Dan’s Table: Kelly’s, Old Homestead, Pocahontas, Un-Embossed Blue Barrel, H.P. Herb, Drakes, Label Under Glass Herb Bitters and two Castilians (to name a few)

Meyer Table at the 2011 Houston Bottle Show

I took of few pictures of my two (2) tables at the 2011 Houston Bottle Show. The proximity of the show allowed me to take some of my light tables and to display a few bottles. I had no illusions that I would sell much (I didn’t) as the Texas crowd seems mostly into Texas Bottles, ACL Sodas, Insulators, Breweriana and Hutches etc.

A Picture of a Picture of Two of Brad Francis’s Kelly’s Old Cabin Bitters

I am at the Houston Bottle Show today.

Folks, this is the best I could get as far as seeing two legendary Kelly’s Old Cabin Bitters. Two recent trips to Brad Francis’s house, which is 10 hours away by car (Texas is a BIG state) resulted in detours because of whiny females. Notice the champagne top on the amber version.

The other Kelly’s pictured is at the show. I saw this recently in Memphis too. Replaced top. Asking price: $26k.

Is there a Blue Embossed Bitters Barrel?

Is there a Blue Embossed Bitters Barrel?

22 July 2011

Apple-Touch-IconAI received the below noted email from Carl Hotkowski which really got me dreaming of a blue Old Sachems……..

Hello Ferdinand, Just a quick question if you have the time. Are there any known embossed blue barrel bitters? Thanks,

Carl Hotkowski

[PRG] Carl: I am unaware of a blue barrel with ‘Bitters’ embossed on the bottle. I only wish! It does bring to mind the un-embossed Bitters type Figural Barrel Bottle which is American, circa. 1860-1880. It is Barrel form with ten rings above and ten rings below a wide center band, applied square collared mouth. Smooth base. Most figural collectors seem to have one. I know Jerry Forbes picked one up in the first minute of the FOHBC Memphis National this year in June (read Jerry Forbes Does it Again).

Bob Ferraro also owns the legendary W. Wolf, Pittsburgh. I believe this is a whiskey. One of a kind.

Both bottles are different shades of blue and are pictured below.
