Stronger than Steel: the Evolution of Glass

Dave Maryo sent me this really informative video on glass. I design in glass when I am not collecting and realize the power and beauty of glass. It is amazing how far glass has come. Thanks Dave….I will also be putting the video on my FMG blog.

Stronger than Steel: the Evolution of Glass

A five-thousand-year-old material gets new life and super strength thanks to new technology. From the 103rd story of the Willis Tower in Chicago to Apple’s future headquarters to a Corning research lab, we see how tough glass can get while maintaining its timeless beauty. (click to see video)

Note: Unfortunately you need to watch the 30 second advetisement to see video. Please be patient.

E. Kauffeld Pikes Pike Flask

Received this email and pictures from Jim Bender….

Hi Ferd,

I am sending you a few photos of what is believed to be the rarest mold of a Pikes Peak flasks GX1-49. I had the rare chance to have this flask for a few days before I delivered it to it’s new owner a good friend of mine. The bottle is a quart with a light pink tint to it. It has only been in the hands of a few collectors over the past 100 years. It is know resting in its new home where it will be a very long time to come. It is believed to be a one of a kind. Thought it would be nice to share it with others who will never get to see it. Feel free to post it on your site as well as the FOHBC site.

Cathedral Pickle Picture Page

Peter Piper Picked a Peck of Pickled Peppers and Posted it on The Peachridge Cathedral Pickle Picture Page

It was really a great experience to see the Cathedral Pickle display at the FOHBC York Show (was it York or Wilmington?)…I believe it was displayed by Terry Gillis. This glass is incredible in it’s form and beauty. The various sizes and aqua colors really make for great groupings. Anyway, I thought I would create a page of great pictures. Please send me some killer group shots so I can post.

What!!! Pontiled Green Highland Bitters and Scotch Tonic

31 July 2011

You Have Got to Be Kidding!

  • Apple-Touch-IconAThis past Wednesday started off innocently enough until I received an eBay alert from Jeff (Froggy) Burkhardt about a pontiled Highland Bitters and Scotch Tonic. Jeff is great in spotting anomalies. See below..

Jeff states ‘Did you see this HIGHLAND? Only on for 24 hours & therefore never went the distance. VERY suspicious! Hope the buyer isn’t screwed. Have never seen a pontiled Highland in GREEN. If so, cheap at the price…if the buyer gets the bottle’.

A follow-up email from Marke Warne stated ‘I agree with Jeff. A one day auction says alot and no seller feedback did it for me’

The Ring/Ham listing is as follows:

H 117  HIGHLAND BITTERS (au) / AND / SCOTCH TONIC ( ad ) // c // 9 5/8 x 2 1/8 (8), Barrel, 10-10, NSC, Applied mouth, Yellow, Amber and Olive green – Rare; Amber and Olive green and Metallic pontil mark – Extremely rare, The Mansfield Drug Company, Memphis, Tennessee, Circa 1865 – 1875

Then I get this email and pictures from David Reed last night…

Hi Ferdinand, I met you at the Memphis National. I just snagged the super rare pontiled Memphis barrel a couple days ago. I’ve talked to many people about the Highland Bitters, and noone Ive talked to in the past few years have ever seen a green one with a pontil. I have talked to the go to Memphis guys and they told me it’s the only pontiled green one known. They tell me that the ones with a pontil are all amber and they are a iron or graphite and not open like this one. Its not a tubular pontil, but that like a Townsend sarsaparilla. This bottle is just KILLER! crudity, color, and condition are all great. It has millions of seed bubbles. Nice and clean too. Its green in all natural lights. Its a darker shade of green also. It’s the same color as a couple case gins I have. Get back with me and let me know what you think. Thanks, David Reed

OK…I just spoke to David and got the Jimmy…Story is that the bottle came from a 90 year old lady and showed up at a flea Market in Fayetteville, Tennessee. The eBay guy who bought it paid a couple of bucks.

This is certainly BIG NEWS! I thought my example was nice (see below)…it doesn’t even compare…

Connecticut – The Willington Glass Works Colors

From New England glass collector Michael George:

Visit Mike’s Web Site BottleShow.com

The Willington Glass Works in CT was in business for an astounding 57 years from 1815-1872. The earlier production was most earthy tone olive and olive-amber colors. Here are 3 earlier pieces, all appear to have been made from the same dip mold and have very similar pontil scars.

Later Willington products offered a wider range of colors… here are 4 Willington quart flasks in very diverse colors.

Tom Doligale and his Udolpho Wolfe’s Aromatic Schnapps

In case you missed it, Ralph Finch did a nice two (2) page spread in the latest July 2011 Antique Bottle & Glass Collector titled EXHIBITIONISTS, Tom Doligale is on the trail of rare pontiled Wolfes. The photo was taken by Janet Finch (see above). To subscribe to AB&GC (click here).

Anyway, I wanted more pictures! I had seen his display at the 2010 Wilmington, Ohio FOHBC National and was knocked over. Well… Tom sends me like a hundred or so killer pictures. Wow!!! this was tough…I picked a few of my favorites as far as dramatic photography and posted below…Tom will definitely be represented in the FOHBC Virtual Museum project (click here)

Congratulations Tom…this is an incredible collection. Well done photographs too!

Unlisted Morning Call Bitters

Unlisted Morning Call Bitters

30 July 2011

Apple-Touch-IconABy now, I suppose many of you have heard about the unlisted Morning Call Bitters that I was fortunate enough to win at the FOHBC live auction at the 2011 FOHBC Memphis National Bottle Show & Sale. After much promotion, fanfare and advance publicity (which is not the way to get a bottle cheap!) the bottle was finally auctioned on 25 June 2011. After rather spirited on-line and floor bidding, the eventual hammer price was $5,460.00. Ouch.

Read: A Morning Call Bitters Comparison

I possess quite a few unlisted and/or extremely rare bitters bottles and this is one I will cherish with the rest.
