The Reno Arches – FOHBC Expo 2012

Reno Arch 1952

Reno Arch 1952

I don’t get to Reno, Nevada often but I sure do remember the FOHBC Reno/Sparks Expo in 2006. Without a doubt, this was the best bottle show that I have ever attended. The glass was simple overwhelming. This seemed to be a favorite for many.

Anyway, the FOHBC 2012 Expo is again in Reno. The show flyer put together by Richard Siri and Marty Hall has a really cool architectural arch as an image. I did a little research and am posting a few of the arch designs over the past decades for your enjoyment.

Look at this Color for this Hostetter’s Bitters

Hostetters Puce

Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters in a rather Unique Color

Look at this Color for this Hostetter’s Bitters!

07 July 2011

Jim Bender sent me this picture of a legendary Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters bottle. I had heard about this boy but I had never seen a picture. Kind of like a Yeti sighting huh? Even this picture is mysterious! Anyway, does anyone have any more information or pictures? Bet Richard Siri knows about this bottle.

Mystery of the Day

Hi Ferd,

I sent you this photo a few days ago but it must have gotten lost. I first saw this bottle about 20 years ago at a show here in the Northeast. The color is best called pink with a touch of purple and puce. The photo makes it look more purple than pink. When you said at the meeting if there where a Hostetter’s shoot-out Richard would most likely win I would tell this guy that. Enjoy the photo and I will tell the story about the bottle next time I see you.

C.C. Jerome National Bitters from Detroit

Jerome Bitters Pair

C.C. Jerome National Bitters Pair – Scharnowske Collection

C.C. Jerome National Bitters from Detroit

04 July 2011 (R•090518)

Another very exciting email from noted Michigan collector Jeff “scharno” Scharnowske…

OK, now for something more up your alley, Ferd. Here are the only two known examples (pictured above) of the triangular shaped C.C. Jerome National Bitters from Detroit. These two and the coffin shaped example that Sandor purchased recently are the only known Jerome bitters. You might as well report on your website that I was the fool who paid $11,500 (plus the premium) for the cracked example from ABA’s most recent auction. I just had to bring this bottle back to Michigan, since my collection is mainly Michigan bottles.

[Editor Note: Fool One Day…Brilliant the Next!]

The example on the left is from American Bottle Auctions and is a dark black amethyst color. The example on the right is the one that came out of the Detroit River 35+ years ago, with a small hole in one base corner. It broke into about 6 pieces when they tried to tumble it in the ’70’s and Spangler put it back together. It is a medium plum or strawberry puce color and they complement each other nicely.

Note the stretched out neck on the lighter color example, it was stretched out when the glass was still warm and they were applying the lip. By examining details of the embossing, you can see that the two bottles were definitely made in the same mold. Why is this bottle so rare, when they evidently made at least two batches of them, in two different colors? We may never know.

Jeff Scharnowske’s Michigan Strap Sided Whiskey Flasks

Ahh…..long 4th of July weekends are for barbecue and BOTTLES! Incoming email and pictures from noted Michigan collector Jeff Scharnowske. Thanks Jeff. Pretty cool.

Ferd, was just playing with my straps yesterday, brought them out of the basement and into my kitchen windows, thought I would share them with you. Only have 12 examples, and 4 of them are one-of-a-kind. Most Michigan strap sided whiskeys are extremely hard to find.

Simon’s Centennial Bitters and the 4th of July

4th of July Post Card

Simon’s Centennial Bitters and the 4th of July

03 July 2011

Apple-Touch-IconAOld George pretty much says it all on the 4th of July. What a great bottle! According to Ring & Ham, “There are many reproductions of this bottle. Some are faintly lettered, some have no lettering. Some bottles have pontils and some do not. Many have unusual color. Most have different dimensions. Many were made as real reproductions. Others are ornamental bottles with no intent for exact reproduction. Still others were used as whiskey bottles. They were made at Clevenger.”

Quandt Brewery – Troy, New York

You can not help but to notice the prevalence of Ricks Bottleroom on the bottle blogs. Rick (DeMarsh) is everywhere. While poking around and checking him out, I was astounded to find his web site and catch up on who he is and what he is doing in the bottle world. Obviously I am behind the curve here! Check his site out, RicksBottleroom.com.

On one of his Facebook Blogs he posted a picture of some of his green bottles. See Ricks Green Bottles.

I saw this green Quandt Brewing bottle from Rick and I immediately connected with the form, color, embossing, typography and base swirls. WOW!

From Rick’s web site…

Rare Quandt Brewing, swirl base ~ Troy~ j.e. danaher whiskey ~ albany

Here is a local and very hard to get Quandt Brewing in emerald green with the swirl base. These have made it on to the rare list and prices on them have soared, so I was super happy to end up with this perfect example for a good price too. Thanks to my friend Tod Cagle for spotting it before it got taken.

Adam and Andrew Quandt from Troy, New York. The family came from Germany in the 1850 era. Built and ran a brewery on River Street in Troy called Quandt Brewing Company. See my blobs page for pictures of 2 more Quandt variants including a & a Quandt. Their father’s name was Qilliam. Mother was Margaret.

Quandt Brewing was in bankruptcy in 1941 and all fixtures etc. were auctioned off.
